Manual for the displaced
Project Wildeman/ Robin Block | NL
What does it mean to feel at home somewhere? What do the roots of various foreign species have in common? They are looking for nourishment, and they want to settle down and are connected to each other. In Manual for the Displaced, Robin Block, poet and musician, searches for his ancestors in Indonesia. In doing so, he delves into the themes of displacement, a sense of home and life between cultures. What is it like to put yourself in the shoes of people who come to live here from the other side of the world? Also, in the Netherlands, there are millions of people with roots elsewhere. Histories from different cultures come together but are often presented as separate stories. Robin investigates the commonality and starts from his Indian roots. Above ground, he intertwines them into personal stories in a mix of live poetry, hypnotic music and the graceful Indonesian martial art of Pencak Silat.
Robin Block takes you on a journey between two continents, the Netherlands and Indonesia, along with echoes of ancestors and a personal quest in the here and now. The performance starts with an audio walk. Then you enter a ritual space where you are surrounded by sounds and players, part of the story we all make.
