Refraction [breaking light]
Liam McCall & Oscar Starink [Underdogz] | NL, Utrecht
Have you ever noticed that if you look at something through a glass of water, the object seems to change shape and place? This is refraction: a lightwave breaking on a surface and changing velocity, causing us to not see what's beneath the surface. A bit of magic hiding in plain sight.
In the duet Refraction [breaking light] Liam McCall and Oscar Starink, two b-boys from Underdogz crew, research what it means to be a breaker and use light to share that vision. What lies beneath the image of a b-boy, and becomes apparent deep under the surface?
Both boys have been practising together for over 15 years and share a movement vocabulary that is rare and specific, both similar and completely different from each other.
Liam is a young veteran in the dance theatre field working with many different companies (like De Dansers and EenVijfVijf). He also got nominated for the prestigious VSCD Zwaan for most impressive dance performance in 2023. As a young maker his work has already won prizes and is received well by critics and audience.
Oscar Starink is one of the world's top Bboys as a two-times Dutch champion also winning many titles in the international battle circuit. A dancer with control unparalleled, also working in theatre for many years.
"Moving to a soundtrack of jolting and bumping hip-hop jazz by Niels Broos, the dancers demonstrate an impressive mastery of the breaker repertoire."
