This is not a dance
Nastaran Razawi Khorasani & Theater Rotterdam | NL
Dancing is officially prohibited in Iran. Since the Islamic Revolution, all dance dance companies had to close. Many dancers and choreographers moved abroad and the ones who still live in Iran must be resourceful. How do they keep this artform alive? Theatre maker Nastaran Razawi Khorasani presents This is not a dance, a performance about censorship.
Nastaran offers a stage to the voices of choreographers and dancers who live in Iran and the diaspora. How are they dealing with the ban on dance? How do they practice their profession, what dangers do they face, what freedoms do they fight for? This is not a dance is a homage to the moving body. A homage to art that must be made, whatever form.
Nastaran’s performance Songs for no one premiered on Boulevard in 2021. In this performance, she offered a stage to the voices of Iranian children. The performance moved the audience, was critically acclaimed, and performed in various countries.
This is not a dance is nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance Prijs 2024.
