Storm Boender / Fontys Theater | NL
In the documentary solo performance Senang, Storm Boender examines his Indonesian background. You will be taken into the history of the Dutch East Indies in a narrative and musical way. In telling his story, Storm encounters questions, difficulties and sensitivities about his roots.
Senang is a search for answers to questions about everything that has to do with the Dutch East Indies. He goes in search of recognition within his family and within the Indonesian culture to investigate a history that is never spoken of. Meanwhile, he asks himself: when are you a real Indo? Is it when you can make tasty Nasi Goreng? When you sleep in bed with a guling? Or only when you can dance the potjor potjor along? Or is culture very different and is it perhaps something you experience instead of what you do or can do? And what do you experience then? How do you deal with a culture that is slowly disappearing? He is looking for answers to the questions he gets when he looks at his grandparents. What does it mean to be a 3rd generation Indonesian Dutchie?
In Senang, Storm zooms in on himself with the aim of gaining more insight into the traces left by the shared past of the Netherlands and Indonesia. He takes you along on his journey through images, song and storytelling.
Storm Boender is a documentary theater maker who departs from personal stories and is part of Fontys Theater.
