The Fontys Feminist Circus consists of four short circus performances: Soulful Sonata by Micaela Castrillo Vargas, Demorada by Itzel Sandoval Valledares, What you cannot set on paper by Rhea Slootweg and An Aria to Anger by Aurelia Pohli.
Soulful Sonata is a performance that combines elements of circus and physical theatre. Sylvia, the character of aerial rope acrobat Micaela Castrillo Vargas, expresses her emotions through humorous acrobatics and playful physical stunts. Her energetic performance takes you on an emotional journey, where one moment you have reason to burst into laughter and the next moment of hold your breath because of the tension.
In Demorada, aerial hoop acrobat Itzel Sandoval Valledares expresses her own interpretation of femininity through the language of circus and physical theatre. In addition to being meaningful, the performance is also funny and partly stems from her Mexican roots. It results in a festive atmosphere and a woman enjoying herself immensely as she swings, spins, dances and plays with glitter on her hoop - all to the cheerful accompaniment of funky Latin American music.
What you cannot set on paper is an ode to all the sentences we wanted to share but did not say, to the sentences we wish we had never said, and to the search for something in between. Is that called transparency? It's about wanting to capture things on paper while acknowledging their transience. By applying acrobatics, Rhea Slootweg literally adopts different points of view on the paper medium. The other means of communication is a soundscape of sketching sentences, which makes the idea of (internal) writing audible.
Before the emergence of An Aria to Anger, Aurelia Pohli wondered why anger seems to be intertwined in her experience with sadness, frustration and silence. Gender soon proved to be an important factor, leading her to further explore how society treats anger differently based on perceived gender. In The power of feminine rage she uses the dance trapeze as a partner that symbolizes physical discomfort, but at the same time gives freedom and strength to fly through the air and to spin around intimately. In making this show, Aurelia experienced how anger can become constructive and positive, fueling change and empowering people to question this emotion.
Fontys Theater is an initiative of Fontys University of the Arts and consists of a group of young, talented makers who are given the stage to show their graduation performance to the wider public during Boulevard.
