Corpus Criolla
Faizah Grootens X Kip Republic | NL
In Corpus Criolla, choreographer Faizah Grootens takes a closer look at the embodiment and stereotyping with which Creole dance forms are often associated. Infinite circular movements, rhythmic beats, a natural flow and Latin-Caribbean oomph are the ingredients for this dance performance. At the same time, it offers food for thought about current issues such as identity, culture of shame, conventions and traditions, and colonial influences.
For years, choreographer and performer Faizah Grootens has been working with movements from Cuba, Mexico, the Netherlands and Curaçao in a contemporary form. In 2020, she started a development process to give meaning to her personal dance language and message on the one hand, and to shed light on the traditional historical Afro-Caribbean dance styles such as waltz, tambú and zumbi in a contemporary dance style on the other. From her Creole body language, Faizah has dug into the traditions and history of the Curaçao dance forms to create a contemporary story that is deeply rooted in her culture.
Faizah Grootens won the Leo Spreksel Award 2023, an incentive prize for up-and-coming choreography talent.
At both performances, there will be an after talk of 20 minutes.
