The unchangeable DNA
On Friday June 11th, the book Theaterfestival Boulevard 1985-2020 – The unchangeable DNA appears in the bookstore. This biography features its turbulent history, more than two thousand productions and the significance of the festival. Conversations with thirty team members, makers and other collaborators form the backbone of the biography. The publication [248 pages] which contains stories, anecdotes, memories and numerous photos, was written by journalist and city chronicler Eric Alink. The graphic design was made by Karin Jonkers.
'Intimidating and maddening, how much we have experienced, curated, written and photographed between 1985 and 2020. It takes some talent for insanity to write a book about all this, but at the same time it makes one glow with browsing joy and writing happiness.'
- Eric Alink, journalist and city chroniclerTheatre Critics Award
The reason for the festival to produce this book, is the fact that the festival won the Theatre Critics Award 2020. The Society of Dutch Theatre Critics honored Boulevard for its consistently high quality and its inspiring alternative corona-edition in the summer of 2020. This is the very first time in more than fifty years that a festival receives the award. The publication marks a new pivot point in Boulevard’s history; the departure of festival director Viktorien van Hulst [as of 1 July 2021 she takes on the position of General Director of the Performing Arts Fund] and leaving behind de Parade, the beloved central festival square. In the summer of 2021 Boulevard settles down in Zuiderpark in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The book is presented on the 9th of June at the Citadel open air theatre. That same night the award ceremony of the Theatre Critics Award takes place.
The book was made possible with a contribution of the Foundation Friends of Theaterfestival Boulevard. € 10,- of each copy sold goes towards the foundation. Old as well as new friends receive a voucher for a free copy. (while supplies last).
